This is a pretty good introduction to TMS (tension myositis syndrome) and how to deal with it. TMS is a "mindbody" tension pain disorder which, though not recognised by the official medical establishment, is a reality for many, many people. There are various names for it, and Mr Heller calls it Diversion Pain Syndrome (DPS) which emphasises the diversionary nature of the disorder - according to the theory, the "purpose" of the symptoms is to divert the conscious mind away from the real cause, being subconscious, repressed emotions.

It is an easy and very user-friendly read, explaining the disorder in plain language and providing a relatively simple set of solutions. I have no doubt that it would relieve or eliminate the TMS/DPS-related chronic pain of many people, though for a fuller, more detailed and more medically oriented book one should also read the books of the original TMS pioneer, Dr John Sarno, in particular his bestseller "Healing Back Pain - The Mind-Body Connection". In Dr Sarno's book you will find more details of what to expect when trying mindbody treatment, for instance the "symptom imperative" - the tendency of TMS symptoms to go underground when treated superficially, only to reappear in another form. On the other hand, "Healing Back Pain" is not strong on actual treatment procedures whereas "Zero Pain Now" contains some nice exercises at the end.

Many people heal from TMS pains just by reading books that explain mindbody issues. This is called "knowledge therapy". So it could be a good idea to read this book, do the exercises if you still need them after having read it and, if problems persist, read one of Dr Sarno's books. The more you know about mindbody disorders, the easier to get rid of them - they are healable! And do join the "Tension Myositis Syndrome" Facebook group! It took me four books, and a bit of self-therapy, to kick my own stress-related lower-back pain; I can also recommend "The Great Pain Deception" by Steven Ray Ozanich, Dr Sarno's "The Divided Mind" and Dr David Schechter MD's "The MindBody Workbook".

By the way, I'm not so keen on the term "Diversion Pain Syndrome", because it excludes other non-pain mindbody symptoms such as spastic colon, stomach ulcers, various skin complaints etc. According to Dr Sarno and like-minded doctors there are a host of other medical issues incorrectly regarded as having a physiological cause, whereas their origin is in fact tension-based, arising from repressed emotions and other stresses.

This workbook is a necessary companion to the book, in my opinion. It forces us to be accountable and to keep moving forward with reframing our physical pain. It's very interesting how the process works - - so simple but effective. I'm not saying this will work for everyone because there's is no one thing like that, in my experience. But it is worth your time and money to try it and follow through with it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It fell right in place with my views on mind/body connections to healing and I use several energy techniques to remove pain and aches in my own body. The author has spent a good deal of time researching the basis for this technique and testing it. It does work, and one does need to be diligent in practicing the technique for permanent change to happen.
This book was very helpful in figuring out where my joint pain was coming from. I've tried many things to heal myself including medication but this process has been the most beneficial in my healing. Although I'm not 100% pain free everyday with doing this process it gets less and less. I recommend getting the workbook as well because it goes more in depth than the book along with getting email support from the Zero Pain Now staff daily which is immensely helpful! If you want to be pain free I highly recommend this process.

Intentionally repetitive... I woke thinking about the material two days in a row. Now to see if I can put it to work and be pain free indefinitely. If anything, I've already benefited by being inspired to fine tune my own mindfulness practices. I think learning to focus on and identify your emotions is valuable.
Almost as soon as I got into this book, my pain was almost gone. I had muscle pain along with sciatic pain and was doing all I could with reflexology, over the counter meds as well as homeopathy. I heard Adam Heller speak and decided to buy his book. I have just finished reading and know that the pain which has slowly gone down will soon be gone with the ending process. At times it was redundant but it was taking my pain away! So, if. You have pain, try it, you have only to loose the $$ it cost if it doesn't work! AND you have the chance it will work !!
Excellent book for a process to address one's chronic pain. Adam Heller uses the confirmed data partly learned from John Sarno, M.D. and his own coaching experience. He was willing to put his process in the book, and it works. However, as he points out, everyone operates at his/her own absorption rate and level of embodiment of presented concepts, so one person may not turn around as quickly as another, and may have to facilitate their change with some physical movement to allow muscles to rehabilitate themselves (my realization). Adam does emphasize returning to a person's regular prior activity. If a lifestyle change was also required, such as getting off a junk-food diet to restore health, that also needs to be established along with the mental processing discussed. As Adam emphasizes, commitment to the program is essential. Mailing and delivery of the book was timely.
I had my doubts that it would help, but when I practice what he tells you to do my pain decreases. Basically, you state out loud negative emotions you are feeling until your pain decreases or goes away, which wasn't fun...because emotionally it sometimes brought up a lot of garbage.

Though I must admit reading the entire book drove me kinda nuts because it's so repetitive, but I figure it's reinforcing the fact that a lot of our pain is due to unconscious emotions.

Easy to read because the type was large. Wish more books were like this. Though I thought $24.00 was a lot for a modest sized paperback.
